Plans to launch a casino in Preston city centre have been met with rebuttal from a number of churches in the same area.

The gambling industry was worth an estimated ten billion pounds in 2006, and around 250,000 people are labelled “problem gamblers” in the UK. These are described as likely to be male, single and in poor health.

This has resulted in cause for concern by some of Preston’s religious officials. Churches are uniting with other religious establishments to oppose the plans made by Mr Darren Longfellowe; owner of the planned Green Goddess Casino. Mr Longfellowe stated “I don’t know what the big deal about gambling is really. Nearly everyone has vices”.

Reverend Aubriy Atkins claimed that “people who want to gamble at casinos are not the sort of people we want to see in the city centre”. Father Malcolme O’Leary agreed, and described the situation as “evil”, and believes that it’d “encourage crime”.

Preston City Council will be meeting to discuss the plans on Thursday, December 18th. The council have currently refused to comment on the matter, saying ‘it would be inappropriate”.
